“I Will Be Stupid Not to Take Rohr’s Advice” – Rwanda Coach on Beating Super Eagles

Rwanda’s head coach, Thorsten Frank Splitter, has revealed plans to seek assistance from Gernot Rohr in preparation for their crucial 2026 World Cup CAF Qualifying Group C match against Nigeria on March 17, 2025. Splitter hopes Rohr, who recently led Benin to a surprise victory over Nigeria, can provide valuable insights for the upcoming clash.

Currently, Rwanda sits atop Group C with seven points, level with South Africa but ahead due to goal difference. This unexpected success has bolstered their ambitions for a first-ever World Cup appearance, and a win against Nigeria would further solidify their chances.

Rohr, who coached Nigeria for nearly six years before his current tenure with Benin, masterminded a historic 2-1 win over the Super Eagles on June 10. Splitter believes Rohr’s experience and knowledge of the Nigerian team could be pivotal for Rwanda.

“I am very sure we (me and Gernot Rohr) will have a phone call before; it may be two or three, and if he can tell me something, I will be stupid not to take it. For that, we will try to be in contact; if possible, we can help each other; for sure, we will do it,” the Belgian coach stated during an interview with Brila FM.

Rohr’s tactical acumen was evident when Benin’s Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounié overturned Raphael Onyedika’s opener, securing a 2-1 victory for Benin. This victory has made Rohr a sought-after advisor for teams looking to overcome Nigeria.

The Super Eagles, languishing in fifth place with only three points from four matches, are in dire need of a turnaround. Their path to revival begins with an away fixture against Rwanda, followed by a home game against Zimbabwe on March 24, 2025. This campaign will be under new leadership following the resignation of Finidi George and the Nigerian Football Federation’s decision to appoint an expatriate technical adviser.
