Football Mourns: Millwall Goalkeeper Matija Sarkic Dies at 26
Millwall Football Club and the football community at large are mourning the sudden death of Matija Sarkic, the 26-year-old goalkeeper, who passed away while on international duty. The Montenegro international fell ill in Budva, Montenegro, where despite immediate medical attention, he tragically passed away early on Saturday morning.
Matija Sarkic, originally from Grimsby, had recently played a pivotal role in Millwall’s 2023-2024 season, appearing in 33 matches after joining the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers. His career spanned various English clubs including Wigan Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Stoke City. Sarkic, who had also represented Montenegro in international matches, leaves behind a legacy marked by dedication and skill on the pitch.
In a statement released on Saturday, Millwall expressed profound grief, stating, “Millwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26. Matija, The Lions’ number one goalkeeper, made 33 appearances for the club since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2023.”
The club further added, “A Montenegro international, Matija proudly represented his country on numerous occasions. Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time. The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family is respected.”
Matija Sarkic’s untimely death has sent shockwaves through the football community, with clubs and footballing bodies extending their condolences. Crystal Palace, Liverpool FC, and Ipswich Town were among those expressing sympathy and support for Matija’s family and Millwall during this difficult period.
Sarkic’s career, which included 124 senior club appearances and 9 international caps, had recently seen him in action just days before his passing. His sudden death has left a void not only in Millwall but in the hearts of football fans worldwide.
UEFA, in a statement, conveyed, “On behalf of European football, our deepest condolences go to Matija’s friends, family, and everybody who knew him. Rest in peace, Matija.”
