“Vacate your Homes or Be Killed”: Bandits Threaten Residents of Minna Estate
Suspected bandits have issued a chilling ultimatum to the residents of M.I. Wushishi Estate in Minna, Niger State, demanding they vacate their homes or face deadly consequences. The gang, believed to be illegal miners, launched their assault while most male residents were away at work, vandalizing property including breaking windows and damaging vehicles.
A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the attack as a direct retaliation for earlier complaints filed with the neighborhood police about the miners’ activities. “These hoodlums came in broad daylight, causing significant damage to our property. We had already reported their activities to the police, and they warned us that action was imminent,” the resident said.
The situation has prompted some residents to flee the estate out of fear, with many expressing frustration over the perceived lack of government intervention. “The constant threat from bandits, terrorists, and now these miners leaves us feeling unsafe. Where is the government in all of this?” the resident lamented.
In response to the attack, the Niger State Police Command confirmed that a distress call was received on September 2, 2024, around 2:00 PM. Police patrols led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maitumbi were dispatched to the scene, where they managed to disperse the attackers. One individual from the gang was reportedly killed during the clash and taken to the general hospital morgue.
Niger State Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun assured that peace has been restored to the estate, and investigations are underway to apprehend those responsible. “We have positioned patrol teams in the area to prevent further incidents,” Abiodun stated.
