US Elections: Top Democrats Consider Kamala Harris to Replace Biden
President Joe Biden of the United States has insisted on running for reelection, despite mounting pressure from top Democrats in Congress to step aside. Biden rejected questions about his future during an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, following a poor performance in a debate with former President Donald Trump.
With the presidential election set for November 5, 2024, Biden faces increasing calls from party members and officials to allow the Democratic party to choose a new candidate at its convention in six weeks. Although only a few lawmakers have publicly urged Biden to quit, momentum is building for Vice President Kamala Harris to step in.
Biden’s poor debate showing has led some Democrats to worry that his weakness at the top of the ticket could jeopardize the party’s control of the House and Senate. Biden, however, maintains regular communication with key Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Reports from CNN indicate that discussions have already begun about Harris’ potential running mate. High-level Democratic officials, operatives, and donors are increasingly convinced that Biden’s campaign cannot recover, with many advocating for a Harris-led ticket. Some close allies remain skeptical of Biden’s ability to manage a reelection campaign.
Vice President Harris has kept a low profile regarding the speculation, maintaining her support for Biden. However, she has made strategic changes, such as joining Biden for the Fourth of July celebrations and participating in meetings with Democratic governors.
Meanwhile, former President Trump’s campaign has already started targeting Harris. Democratic officials are working to rally donor support for Harris and are strategizing to have Biden endorse her, release his delegates, and prompt other party leaders to follow suit.
Potential running mate options for Harris include North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, both of whom have bipartisan appeal. Cooper and Harris have a longstanding relationship dating back to their tenures as state attorneys general, while Beshear has gained national attention for his popularity and communication skills.
Despite ongoing speculation, Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz has reaffirmed the campaign’s stance: “President Biden is our nominee, Vice President Harris is our running mate, and we will win this November.”
Running Mate Options
The leading candidates for Harris’ running mate are Cooper and Beshear. Cooper, a two-term governor, has a close relationship with Harris and a history of winning elections in North Carolina. Beshear, also a two-term governor, has demonstrated his ability to secure victories in a predominantly Republican state and has garnered national attention for his effective communication and progressive values.
Both governors have strong credentials and bipartisan appeal, making them suitable choices to support Harris in the potential Democratic ticket for the 2024 presidential election.
