JUST IN: Rivers State Sets Date for Local Government Elections
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that local government elections will be held on October 5. This decision comes amid a local government succession crisis sparked by tensions between Governor Siminialayi Fubara and the Martins Amaewhule-led legislature.
In a contentious move, Governor Fubara appointed caretaker committees to oversee the local government areas, despite ousted chairmen asserting their authority based on a six-month tenure extension granted by the legislature.
To prevent potential violence, police have secured all 23 local government secretariats in the state. This precautionary measure will remain in place until the Court of Appeal issues its forthcoming judgment on the matter.
