US Agencies to Release Investigation Reports on Tinubu’s 1990s Drug Case on May 2
The parties involved in the investigation into an alleged drug-related case involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 1990s are set to release their investigation reports on Friday, May 2, 2025, as directed by a U.S. court. The agencies involved in the probe include the U.S. Attorneys, Department of State, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
This move follows a ruling by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia earlier in April, which instructed the involved parties, except the CIA, to file reports on the current status of any outstanding issues in the case. The documents are scheduled for release on May 2. The court’s decision came after Judge Beryl Howell ruled on a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, affirming that withholding the information from public disclosure was neither “logical nor plausible.”
The case originated from a lawsuit filed by American citizen Aaron Greenspan in June 2023, who accused U.S. agencies of violating the FOIA. Greenspan’s legal action sought to compel the release of documents concerning federal investigations into President Tinubu and Abiodun Agbele. Between 2022 and 2023, Greenspan submitted 12 FOIA requests to six different U.S. government agencies, requesting information on a joint investigation involving the FBI, IRS, DEA, and the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for Northern Districts of Indiana and Illinois.
Greenspan’s requests specifically targeted criminal investigative records regarding four individuals allegedly linked to a drug ring, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele. While lawyers have indicated that the court’s order could be appealed, the Nigerian presidency maintains that the information being sought is not new and does not implicate President Tinubu.
