UNN SUG President, Seven Others Suspended Over Alleged Cultism, Misconduct

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has suspended the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Chinedu Ozoagu, alongside seven other union executives over allegations of cultism, threats to life, and gross financial misconduct.

The decision was announced by the SUG House of Representatives following a petition filed by Christian Okeke, which accused the officials of shielding cult groups and enabling the activities of non-students within the university for financial benefits.

In a statement signed by Speaker Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Eze and Clerk Chidozie Onah, the House alleged that the suspended leaders were linked to the murder of a student on campus. They were also accused of using cult groups to intimidate and threaten members of the SUG parliament, including the Speaker, the Clerk, and the Budget Committee Chairman.

On financial impropriety, the statement claimed that:

* A sum of ₦124 million approved for SUG projects under the former Acting Vice-Chancellor (since removed by the Federal Government) was withdrawn and allegedly shared among SUG officials and external actors, with no projects executed.

* An additional ₦100 million withdrawn from the SUG account in the past year is reportedly missing.

* The suspended President allegedly pressured the Speaker to authorise further withdrawals of ₦40 million from the SUG budget and ₦57 million meant for projects, in violation of the Union’s constitution.

The suspended officials include:

* Ihentugo Rejoice (Deputy Speaker)

* Emmanuel Asadu

* Agbo Sobechukwu Malachy

* Chinweike Dorothy

* Victory Chidiebere

* Chukwuma JohnPaul

* Edmund Solomon

The university authorities are yet to issue an official response regarding the suspension, but the allegations have raised serious concerns over governance and accountability within the UNN SUG.
