SSANU, NASU Give Seven-Day Strike Ultimatum Over Unpaid Allowances and Salary Disputes

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have issued a seven-day strike notice to the Federal Government over unresolved grievances affecting non-academic university staff.

In a letter dated September 12, 2025, and signed by SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, the unions condemned what they described as the “unjust” disbursement of earned allowances, the non-payment of outstanding salaries, and delays in renegotiating long-standing agreements. The letter specifically highlighted the uneven distribution of the N50 billion earned allowances, the withholding of salaries, and the pending 25/35% salary increments.

The unions reminded the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, of a June 18 letter from the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU requesting urgent intervention, as well as a follow-up meeting convened by the Minister on July 4, 2025. During that meeting, a Tripartite Committee was to be formed with representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and the unions to resolve the allowance distribution issues. However, the unions say no progress has been made, particularly regarding unpaid salaries and stalled renegotiations of the 2009 FGN and NASU/SSANU agreements.

The letter also noted that while the government has reportedly concluded renegotiations with the Academic Staff Union, non-teaching staff unions have yet to be engaged, despite submitting all necessary demands and attending initial meetings.

The unions warned that if their concerns are not addressed within seven days from September 15, 2025, members would begin a series of industrial actions, including strikes, to press for resolution.
