Unknown Gunmen Launch Bomb Attack on Police Facility in Anambra
In a brazen act of violence, unidentified gunmen targeted the Police Divisional Headquarters located in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, South-east Nigeria. The assault occurred during the late hours of Wednesday night, leaving residents of the community in shock and fear.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants stormed the police facility and hurled explosive devices, intending, as some speculate, to free inmates held within the premises. While the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, reports suggest that the attackers aimed to create chaos and instill fear.
Anambra State Police spokesperson, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, detailing that the explosive devices caused damage to a portion of the facility. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and police personnel successfully repelled the attackers, forcing them to flee the scene.
This latest assault adds to a disturbing trend of violence against security institutions in the region. Over recent times, numerous police facilities have been targeted and destroyed by armed assailants. Additionally, offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have also faced similar attacks, further exacerbating concerns over the deteriorating security situation.
The escalating violence has resulted in tragic loss of lives and widespread abduction, affecting not only civilians but also security personnel, traditional leaders, and government officials. While the Nigerian government has pointed fingers at the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for orchestrating these attacks, the group has consistently denied any involvement.
