Unknown Gunmen Kill Alleged Informant in Abia, Villagers Flee Amid Rising Tensions

Villagers in Umuchima, located in Isiala Ngwa North LGA of Abia State, have been forced to flee their homes following the return of unknown gunmen who killed a man they accused of being an informant to the Nigerian Army. The attack occurred shortly after the Nigerian Army announced that it had destroyed a gunmen’s camp in the area on Tuesday during an operation under the South East Joint Task Force, codenamed Operation Udo Ka.

The victim, a male indigene of Umuchima, was reportedly targeted by the gunmen for allegedly providing information to the Army about their presence in the village. In the wake of the killing, many villagers, fearful for their safety, left their homes and sought refuge in nearby villages, vowing to return when the situation calms down. The displaced residents, who carried only essential belongings, expressed their fear of becoming unintended victims in the ongoing conflict.

One villager speaking to newsmen describes the situation as terrifying. “The fear is real. They stormed the village like commandos and killed a native who they accused of being an informant,” the villager said.

This latest violence follows a clash between personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and unidentified gunmen in Umuchima earlier this week. According to reports, over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers were deployed to the village around 6 a.m., targeting the gunmen who were reportedly camping near a river that marks the boundary between Abia and Mbaise in Imo State.

The attack is part of an ongoing security crisis in Abia State, where gunmen have killed numerous security personnel. The Abia State Government and security agencies have pledged to intensify efforts to rid the state of the armed groups terrorizing the area.
