UNIZIK Staff Face Dismissal, Suspension Amid Extortion and Fraud Allegations
In a significant move to address mounting concerns over unethical behavior, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has taken decisive action against staff members and students involved in extortion and fraud. A panel established by the university has recommended the dismissal, suspension, and expulsion of over 14 individuals.
Among those implicated are a clergyman and three lecturers, along with numerous students found guilty of aiding and abetting exam fraud and financial misconduct. This announcement was made in an official statement released on Sunday by Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor for Public Relations and Special Duties.
UNIZIK has been grappling with a series of challenges, including sexual harassment and extortion, in recent times. The latest crackdown on misconduct is a clear signal of the university’s commitment to upholding its integrity and academic standards.
Three lecturers are accused of extorting money from students who have not successfully completed their courses, even going so far as to employ fellow students in their illicit activities.
According to the statement, disciplinary actions have been taken against several individuals for various offenses. A Principal Executive Officer II was suspended for gross misconduct after abandoning their duty post for an extended period. Their suspension will last for six months, serving as a deterrent to other officers.
Additionally, a Senior Executive Officer was suspended for six months on half salary due to fraudulent financial transactions concerning the university.
The Reverend priest and another individual were found guilty of aiding and abetting examination misconduct by accepting gratification from students. Furthermore, one lecturer was implicated in clearing and graduating a student with 12 outstanding courses.
The panel has recommended the lecturer’s dismissal from the university’s services, withdrawal of the student’s results, and withholding of credentials such as certificates and transcripts.
As UNIZIK takes bold steps to address these issues, it sends a strong message that unethical behavior and academic misconduct will not be tolerated within its institution. The university remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of education and integrity.
