NDLEA’s Nationwide Drug Bust: Laughing Gas and Illicit Substances Seized, Criminals Apprehended

In a series of coordinated operations, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has struck a major blow against drug trafficking and abuse across multiple states in Nigeria. The agency’s efforts resulted in the interception of over four tons of illicit drugs, including the highly sought-after nitrous oxide, colloquially known as ‘laughing gas.’ In addition to the seizures, numerous suspects have been apprehended, marking a significant victory in the ongoing battle against narcotics.

Abuja-Bound Laughing Gas Intercepted

On Friday, September 22nd, NDLEA operatives made a decisive move by intercepting two Toyota Sienna buses along the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja expressway. These vehicles were carrying a staggering 1,194 cylinders of laughing gas, weighing a total of 2,547.2 kilograms. The suspects, Onyebuchi Ikpozu and Kenneth Igwe, were en route to the nation’s capital, Abuja, with the intention of distributing this controlled substance. Both individuals have been arrested and are currently in custody.

Skunk, Methamphetamine, and Tramadol Seizures

In parallel operations conducted across Lagos, Kogi, FCT, Jigawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Edo states, NDLEA agents intercepted a variety of illicit substances. In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), 977 kilograms of skunk were discovered in a trailer loaded with cartons of maggi. This significant skunk haul was destined for distribution in Sokoto and Gwagwalada. Two suspects, Auwal Mohammed and Abdullahi Abubakar, have been apprehended in connection with this seizure.

Furthermore, in a separate operation within the FCT, two suspects, Mutari Abdulazeez and Ayuba Madaki, were arrested with methamphetamine, cannabis, and 13,930 pills of tramadol.

Other Drug Busts Across Nigeria

The NDLEA’s operations extended beyond the FCT, with arrests and seizures occurring in various states. Notably, Shuaibu Yusif and Abubakar Hussaini were arrested with 89.1 kilograms of skunk along the Kano-Hadejia road in Jigawa state.

In Kaduna, Usman Musa Sidi was apprehended with 6,000 ampules of pentazocine injection, leading to the arrest of Dominic Chukwuma, the consignment’s owner, with additional drugs recovered from his residence.

Meanwhile, in Sokoto, Charles Okeke was caught with 473 bottles of codeine syrup, and in Edo state, 365 blocks of compressed cannabis sativa were seized.

Massive Cannabis Plant Destruction in Ekiti State

In a major operation in Ekiti state, NDLEA operatives took on drug cultivation at its source. They destroyed a staggering 40 tons (40,000 kilograms) of cannabis plants covering 16 hectares of farmland in Ijesha Isu-Ekiti, Ikole Local Government Area.

Nationwide Sensitization Efforts

Throughout this period of intense enforcement, NDLEA Commands have continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization lectures and advocacy visits. These initiatives have reached various communities, schools, places of worship, workplaces, and traditional palaces, spreading awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the dedication of officers and personnel across the country for their unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse. The agency’s proactive stance in sensitizing communities and individuals about the perils of drug abuse further underscores its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria from the drug menace.
