Unarmed Student Shot Dead by Private Security in Anambra: Father Seeks Justice

A tragic incident occurred over the weekend in Akili-Ozizor, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, where a student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, was fatally shot by a private security operative. The victim, identified as 27-year-old Chinedu Okechukwu, was the son of Comrade Rex Okechukwu, a former secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Anambra State.

The incident took place shortly after Chinedu returned to his family home in Ochuche. According to a family source, Chinedu had informed his father of his intention to purchase fresh fish from a pond located within Senator Stella Odua Estate, in a nearby community. However, within 30 minutes, the family was informed by a motorcyclist that Chinedu had been shot by a vigilante operative at the estate.

Reacting to the tragic news, Comrade Rex Okechukwu expressed his shock and devastation. He disclosed that his son had an altercation with two security guards at the estate, during which one of them opened fire on him. Chinedu, who reportedly collapsed after the gunshot, was given water by one of the guards before succumbing to his injuries.

Comrade Okechukwu condemned the actions of the security personnel, criticizing the use of firearms by untrained individuals. He questioned why his son was not handed over to law enforcement if he had acted inappropriately, rather than being subjected to lethal force.

In response to the incident, Comrade Okechukwu has filed a petition with the local Divisional Police Officer (DPO), demanding the immediate arrest and investigation of those involved. He emphasized the need for justice, describing the attack as a senseless act of brutality.

The petition also called for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The DPO, identified as Mr. Andrews, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is currently underway.
