Ukraine Denies Involvement in Moscow Attack as White House Affirms ISIS Responsibility
In the aftermath of the tragic massacre at a Moscow concert hall claiming over 130 lives, Ukraine vehemently denies any involvement, countering Russian President Vladimir Putin’s insinuations of a Kyiv connection.
White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson categorically stated, “ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack. There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever.”
Vice President Kamala Harris echoed this sentiment, stating in an interview with ABC News’ “This Week,” “There was ‘no’ evidence that Ukraine was involved. ISIS-K is actually, by all accounts, responsible for what happened.”
The attack, orchestrated by camouflaged gunmen who stormed the Crocus City Hall in Moscow’s northern suburb of Krasnogorsk before setting the building ablaze, was claimed by the Islamic State group’s branch in Afghanistan and Pakistan. A video purportedly filmed by the assailants has circulated on social media channels affiliated with ISIS.
Russian President Putin, in his response to the atrocity, made no mention of ISIS’s claims, instead alleging that four gunmen attempting to flee to Ukraine had been apprehended. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed these claims, accusing Putin of attempting to shift blame onto Ukraine.
The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K), responsible for the attack, emerged in Afghanistan around 2015 with ambitions to establish a strict Islamic caliphate spanning regions including India, Iran, and Central Asia. Despite facing opposition from the Taliban, ISIS-K has escalated its global activities, demonstrating a continued threat.
