UK: Canterbury Archbishop, Who Conducted Service At King Charles’s Coronation, Fined For Overspeeding
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has been fined for over £500 for speeding in London. The 67-year-old was reportedly also given three penalty points.
BBC reported that the Archbishop was recorded driving at 25mph in a 20mph zone in his Volkswagen Golf last year. Justin Welby reportedly admitted the offence and was sentenced by a magistrate’s court on Wednesday.
The Archbishop was caught by a speed camera on October 2, BBC reported. Welby pleaded guilty online and was ordered to pay a £300 fine, a £120 victim surcharge and £90 in legal costs, the publication reported. Welby was reportedly driving along the Albert Embankment towards his official residence at Lambeth Palace.
Lambeth Palace’s spokesperson said the Archbishop was unaware that the case was being dealt with in court. “He has tried to resolve this and pay the fine three times. He has all the paperwork to prove that he has tried to pay. Admin errors seem to be causing problems,” BBC quoted the spokesperson as saying.
