UGM: Six Dead in Aba Following Attack on Police Patrol Team

The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of six individuals, including a police inspector, two gunmen, and three civilians, in a violent attack on a police patrol team in Aba on Sunday.

The incident occurred around 11:28 am when operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) were ambushed by armed assailants along Ngwa Road near Mosque Junction. According to a press release by Police Public Relations Officer ASP Maureen Chinaka, the assailants, who were in an ash-colored Sienna vehicle, opened fire on the police patrol.

“Police operatives repelled the attack, preventing what could have been a deadlier outcome,” the statement said. During the ensuing gunfire, two of the attackers were killed, while others fled with injuries. Tragically, Inspector Shehu Oyibo and three civilians were also killed. The civilian victims have been identified as Chika Godliveth, Onyenaturuchi Jonah, 32, from Item in Bende LGA, Abia State, and Eniobong Godsgift Clement, 18, from Akwa Ibom State.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the mortuary, and a manhunt is underway for the remaining assailants. The police have urged the public to report any suspicious individuals, particularly those with bullet wounds, to the nearest police station.

In an effort to reassure the community, the Abia State Police Command has deployed officers to key locations throughout the state to maintain security and protect lives and property. Residents are encouraged to continue their daily activities without fear, as measures are being taken to ensure their safety.
