Police Parade Family Members for Torturing 13-Year-Old Girl Falsely Accused of Theft
The Nigerian Police Force has paraded several family members accused of torturing a 13-year-old girl with hot water and pepper following a false theft accusation. The girl, identified as Bridget Samuel, was allegedly punished for stealing ₦5,000 from her uncle’s wife.
David Iloyanomon, the Commissioner of Police in Taraba State, revealed the details during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Jalingo. The case was reported on July 1, 2024, at Yorro Division. According to the Commissioner, Bulus Bitonopa is accused of inflicting severe burns and causing temporary paralysis in Bridget’s hands. Additionally, Hon. Cleopas reportedly took the victim to his residence in Jalingo, attempting to hide the abuse and prevent medical intervention.
Medical examinations at the Federal Medical Centre Jalingo indicate that Bridget may suffer permanent damage to her hands. She described the ordeal, stating that her uncles bound her hands with a rubber, immersed them in hot water mixed with pepper and sand, and only received medical care after being untied the following day.
In related news, the police have also arrested 38 individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping, armed robbery, and illegal firearm possession. The arrests followed credible intelligence and collaboration with local vigilante groups. Notable seizures include multiple firearms and ammunition, as well as a stolen vehicle.
Commissioner Iloyanomon called on Taraba residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to assist the police under proper supervision. He commended the efforts of the state government, other agencies, and community volunteers in enhancing security and maintaining order.
