Two Killed in Two-Hour Gun Battle Between Police and Suspected Separatists in Anambra

Two suspected armed hoodlums were killed during a prolonged gun battle with police operatives at Enugwu Agidi Junction in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The Anambra State Police Command said the clash occurred in the early hours of January 14, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the operatives laid an ambush for a five-man gang suspected to be involved in armed robbery, cult activities, and links to a proscribed secessionist group. The suspects reportedly opened fire on sighting the police, leading to a gun battle that lasted about two hours.

Ikenga said two members of the gang sustained fatal gunshot injuries, while three others escaped with gunshot wounds.

Items recovered at the scene included one T.06 rifle, two pump-action guns, 24 rounds of T.06 ammunition, 15 live cartridges, assorted charms believed to be used for criminal purposes, a cult red beret, and a black Toyota Highlander vehicle.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that one of the suspects, before dying, confessed that the gang was involved in a previous attack on the convoy of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, which was repelled by police operatives. The suspect also admitted membership of the Vikings confraternity and said the group was on a retaliatory mission following the killing of one of its members by a rival cult group.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for the operation and directed them to intensify efforts to arrest the fleeing suspects.

The police also advised hospitals and medical facilities to report any individual seeking treatment for gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.

Investigations are ongoing, and the command said further updates will be provided as events unfold.
