Trump Stops HIV Funding for Nigeria, Other Developing Countries
The United States has suspended funding for HIV treatment programs in Nigeria and several other developing nations following an executive order from President Donald Trump. The decision, which affects the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), will pause disbursements for at least 90 days.
The move follows Trump’s directive on his first day in office, instructing government agencies overseeing foreign aid programs to suspend funding. As a result, nearly all US global health assistance, including PEPFAR, has been put on hold.
PEPFAR, a key initiative in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, operates with an annual budget of $6.5 billion and has provided treatment to more than 20.6 million people worldwide. The program is credited with saving an estimated 26 million lives since its inception. However, the US State Department stated that it would no longer distribute funds “blindly” without tangible benefits for Americans.
Public health experts have raised concerns that the Trump administration could permanently end PEPFAR, a move that would have severe consequences for countries heavily reliant on US support. Some observers are hopeful that newly appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a longtime supporter of the program, may influence a reversal of the decision.
In Nigeria, where approximately two million people live with HIV, PEPFAR has been instrumental in providing life-saving medications and strengthening healthcare infrastructure. The country, one of the hardest hit by the HIV epidemic, has received over $6 billion from PEPFAR. A prolonged funding freeze or permanent suspension could significantly undermine efforts to combat the virus, leaving millions at risk.
