Trump Announces Conditional Two-Week Ceasefire as Iran Sets Terms for Reopening Strait of Hormuz
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, tied to conditions surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump said the United States would suspend planned and ongoing military action against Iran for a period of two weeks, provided Tehran agrees to guarantee the “complete, immediate, and safe” reopening of the key oil transit route.
The U.S. president said the decision followed discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who urged restraint and called for a pause in escalation.
Trump stated that Washington had already achieved its primary military objectives and was advancing toward a broader agreement aimed at long-term stability in the Middle East. He added that a 10-point proposal submitted by Iran is being considered as a basis for further negotiations, with the two-week window intended to allow both sides to finalise terms.
Reports indicate that Israel has also aligned with the ceasefire arrangement and halted its military operations during the period.
The announcement came shortly before a deadline earlier set by Trump, in which he warned of severe consequences if Iran failed to meet U.S. expectations.
Iranian authorities have described the development as a strategic gain. The country’s supreme national security council said the United States had effectively accepted its proposed framework, including provisions related to sanctions relief.
According to the council, the proposal also outlines regulated passage through the Strait of Hormuz under the coordination of Iranian armed forces.
Further details on enforcement, monitoring, and the scope of the potential long-term agreement have not yet been disclosed.
