Trial Begins for Doctors Accused of Causing Patient’s Death in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has officially commenced the trial of two doctors, Michael Atiba and Michael Ugbeye, in connection with the death of a patient, Ejiro Ugorobi. The proceedings are taking place at the Ikeja High Court, under the supervision of Justice Oyindamola Ogala.

The doctors were arraigned on March 25, 2024, on charges of involuntary manslaughter. Both have pleaded not guilty to the allegations brought against them by the Lagos State Government.

According to the prosecution, led by counsel A.O. Azeez, Atiba, who is associated with the Gbagada General Hospital, and Ugbeye, a consultant at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, are facing charges stemming from an incident that occurred on October 21, 2023, at Michael Adekoya Street, Ilupeju.

During the trial, Nkechi Ugorobi, the mother of the deceased, recounted the events leading to her son’s death. She explained that Ejiro, a 29-year-old electrical engineer, sustained a leg injury while playing football on September 9, 2023. “He called me and told me that he had fallen while playing football,” she stated, noting that her son described his injury as serious and mentioned that he needed to see Dr. Ugbeye for treatment.

Following consultations, Ejiro was diagnosed with a torn ligament. Despite initially showing signs of improvement, Ugorobi later experienced persistent pain, prompting discussions about further tests. His mother testified that Ejiro underwent a non-invasive surgery on October 21, 2023, accompanied by his sister.

After the surgery, Ejiro reported feelings of discomfort, nausea, and alternating fever. He also expressed weakness, shortness of breath, and palpitations. Shortly thereafter, he passed away, raising concerns over the medical care he received.

Justice Ogala has adjourned the case until November 20, 2024, for the trial and cross-examination of the prosecution’s second witness, as the court continues to examine the circumstances surrounding Ejiro Ugorobi’s tragic death.
