Tragedy Strikes: Two Churchgoers Lose Their Lives in Ogun River Drowning Incident
In a heart-wrenching incident, Femi Akinola and Tunde Falade, both faithful members of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Lagos, lost their lives due to a drowning mishap in the Ogun River. The incident occurred on Monday, prompting shock and grief among the congregation.
Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, issued a statement on Tuesday, shedding light on the unfortunate incident. According to Odutola, Femi Akinola (32), a resident of Odo Eran in Itire, Lagos State, and Tunde Falade (35), hailing from Kola Alagbado, Lagos, had traveled from Lagos to attend a church event at the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Onikoko, Ogun State.
Tragically, a leisurely swim turned fatal for the two churchgoers. As recounted by a fellow church member, Adebayo Adeosun, a group of approximately seven individuals, including Akinola and Falade, left the church premises to indulge in a swim. Their excursion took a dire turn when they encountered treacherous waters, resulting in their inability to stay afloat.
Efforts to save the two men were not in vain, as they were eventually rescued from the turbulent tides. However, their lives could not be restored. A swift transport to the Itori Health Centre followed, but the attending medical personnel could only confirm their untimely demise, leaving the community devastated by the sudden loss.
CSP Olayemi Jacob, the diligent Divisional Police Officer, took immediate action in response to the incident. Upon visiting the scene and conducting a thorough examination, it was concluded that no signs of foul play or external harm were evident. The prevailing belief is that the tragedy was a result of a devastating accident rather than any malicious intent.
The Cherubim and Seraphim Church community, both in Lagos and Ogun States, now mourns the loss of two valued members. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of safety precautions, even in seemingly harmless activities. As the churchgoers’ families and friends grapple with their grief, the entire community extends its heartfelt condolences and stands united in this difficult time.
