Tragedy Strikes as Five Lose Lives in Fuel Scooping Incident in Kwara
In a devastating incident that sent shockwaves through the Moro Local Government Area, at least five lives were tragically lost, and numerous others suffered injuries as a fuel-laden tanker overturned and burst into flames. The incident, which unfolded over the weekend, occurred approximately one hour and thirty minutes after the tanker carrying highly inflammable petroleum products toppled.
The disaster unfolded as locals attempted to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker, unaware of the impending danger. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and horror as the spilled fuel ignited. The inferno quickly spread, claiming lives and injuring multiple individuals.
Frightened residents, in a desperate bid to protect their vehicles from the spreading flames, hastily moved them away from the scene. One eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted the harrowing events to Channels Television. They said, “After the petrol tanker fell, some of the product found its way into the gutter and was ignited as it flowed along by a fire from some residents cooking outside.”
Tragically, the incident resulted in the death of two children who had ventured out to fetch water, with one succumbing to their injuries. The other child is currently fighting for their life in a local hospital. Furthermore, an unfortunate man who had gone to a nearby bush to defecate was caught in the raging fire and suffered severe burns.
The most devastating part of the incident was the fate of three individuals who continued to scoop fuel even as the fire blazed. Regrettably, they were consumed by the flames and their charred bodies were only discovered the following day. The source stated that the total death toll has reached five, with approximately seven people sustaining injuries in the horrific incident.
Some of the injured victims were immediately rushed to the hospital, but the severity of their burns was such that they had to be transferred to the University of Ilọrin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for specialized medical care.
Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, the spokesman for the Kwara Fire Service, confirmed the tragic event, stating that it had been a challenging ordeal for all involved. The fire was ultimately contained with the assistance of the fire service from the Jebba Paper Mill. However, Adekunle was unable to provide an exact count of the casualties, indicating that the incident had resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with fuel-related accidents and the need for increased awareness and safety measures in communities where such hazards are present.
