Tragedy in Ogun as Man Allegedly Kills One-Year-Old Son During Fight with Wife
A tragic incident occurred in the Elega area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, where a man identified as Olamide allegedly killed his one-year-old son during a violent altercation with his wife.
According to residents, the couple had engaged in a heated argument late Saturday night when Olamide, in a fit of rage, reportedly picked up an iron rod—part of a weightlifting set—and attempted to strike his wife. In the process, the rod mistakenly hit their son, Ayinde, on the head, leading to his death.
A video shared on Facebook captured reactions from neighbours, who described how they were alerted by loud noises from the couple’s apartment. One of the co-tenants, Mrs. Bolatito, told The Punch that she was called out by the wife, who cried for help, saying her husband had killed their child.
“When I got there, she said I should help get a vehicle. We rushed the boy to Trinity Hospital, the closest one around, and were told he was already dead,” Bolatito said. “On getting home, we noticed the child was still making faint sounds, so we took him back to the hospital, but he was confirmed dead again.”
She added that the man had a history of violence, alleging that the wife had lost a previous pregnancy due to beatings.
The chairman of the community, Ramoni Adegbola, also confirmed the incident. He said neighbours called him when the fight began, and he arrived to find the couple with their injured child. He alleged that Olamide was known for frequent drug use and violent behaviour. “There was a time he took something and fainted. We had to help revive him,” he added.
Following the incident, Olamide reportedly fled the scene but later turned himself in to a police station.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is currently ongoing.
