Tragedy in Imo: 17 Dead After Tipper Collides with Commercial Bus on Orlu Road
Seventeen people tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident on Tuesday when a tipper truck collided with an 18-seater commercial bus along Orlu Road in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tipper driver, while attempting to avoid a pothole, veered off his lane and slammed into the oncoming bus. The force of the impact resulted in the deaths of all passengers on board, including the bus driver and two conductors. The tipper driver sustained critical injuries and was reportedly found unconscious at the scene.
Local residents, who arrived shortly after the crash, described a harrowing scene. Some bodies were trapped under the crushed vehicles, making recovery efforts challenging. Emergency responders and local volunteers worked to retrieve the deceased, and the bodies were subsequently transferred to a local morgue.
Efforts to reach Okoye Henry, the police spokesperson in Imo State, for further comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
This tragedy comes just months after another deadly incident in May, when a truck reportedly lost control due to brake failure and collided with multiple buses at the Imo State University (IMSU) junction, claiming 15 lives. That accident occurred in the Ugwu-Orji area, where similar incidents have been reported due to hazardous road conditions.
The recent accident has once again raised concerns about road safety in the state, with residents calling on authorities to address ongoing issues like potholes and improve road maintenance to prevent further loss of lives.
