Tobi Amusan Shatters World-Leading 100m Hurdles Record

Tobi Amusan, the reigning world record-holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, once again etched her name into the annals of track and field history. At the Jamaica Athletics Invitational, Amusan blazed through the hurdles with unparalleled speed, setting a scorching world-leading time of 12.40 seconds (with a wind speed of 0.9m/s).

The race was not without its drama as two-time world champion Danielle Williams surged ahead in the early stages, only to falter over the final hurdles, conceding victory to Amusan. Williams crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 12.46 seconds.

“This is the healthiest I’ve been. It’s a pain-free season compared to other years,” Amusan remarked, reflecting on her outstanding performance.

Expressing her determination and focus, Amusan added, “I told myself: ‘I’m not getting a DQ today’. I’m not the best of starters, but looking at how I executed today, it could have been better, but I am thankful for the win.”

The Nigerian Minister of Sports, John Enoh, took to social media to heap praise on the remarkable achievement of Amusan. In a tweet, he lauded her triumph and highlighted the significance of her victory in the context of Nigeria’s aspirations for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.

“Take your flowers Tobi Amusan, you stormed to an emphatic win in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Jamaica Athletics Invitational, clocking a time of 12.40s (0.9), a World Lead time!” Enoh tweeted. “Tobi, you keep making our country proud. Paris Olympics is around the corner, your performance gives us hope just like others that Nigeria is set to break a jinx. Keep soaring, we are proud of you.”

Amusan’s stellar performance not only solidifies her status as a world-class athlete but also positions her as a formidable contender for Olympic glory at Paris 2024. With her unwavering determination and unmatched skill, she is poised to lead Team Nigeria to a medal haul at the upcoming Games, igniting hope and pride across the nation.
