In a surprising turn of events, Tobi Amusan, the reigning World Champion, faced an unexpected setback as she finished in 6th place during the final of the 100m hurdles at the ongoing World Athletics Championship in Budapest on Wednesday.
The title was clinched by Jamaican sprinter Danielle Williams, who showcased an impressive performance with a season-best time of 12.43 seconds. Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, the reigning Olympic champion, secured the second position with a time of 12.44 seconds, closely followed by the USA’s Kendra Harrison, who claimed third place with a time of 12.46 seconds.
Amusan, who had previously held the title, experienced a disappointing run in the final, completing the race in 12.62 seconds. This marked her third consecutive appearance in the championship’s final, reflecting her consistency in the competition.
In the 2022 World Championship held in Eugene, USA, Amusan had displayed a remarkable performance, clinching the gold medal with a time of 12.40 seconds, which also established a new African record. Notably, she went on to break the world record with an astonishing time of 12.12 seconds, surpassing Kendra Harrison’s previous record of 12.20 seconds set in 2016.
The loss prevented Amusan from achieving a rare distinction, as she missed the opportunity to become the fourth woman in history to secure multiple gold medals in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Championships. This feat has previously been accomplished by Gail Devers and Michelle Perry of the United States, as well as Australian athlete Sally Pearson.
Amusan competed fiercely against a strong field of athletes, including Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland, Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, as well as American contenders Kendra Harrison and Nia Ali. The Jamaican duo of Ackera Nugent and Danielle Williams also added to the intensity of the competition at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary.
Despite the unexpected outcome, Tobi Amusan’s dedication and remarkable achievements in the sport continue to inspire athletes and fans around the world. As the World Athletics Championship progresses, the competition remains fierce and unpredictable, showcasing the incredible talent and determination of athletes on the global stage.
