Tinubu’s Government Subsidizes 2024 Hajj Fares With N90 Billion
Exclusive report from Daily Trust revealed that the federal government has allocated a substantial sum of N90 billion to subsidize the 2024 pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The revelation comes as a relief to intending pilgrims who would have faced significant financial burdens otherwise.
According to a reliable source within the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), without this intervention, each pilgrim would have been required to pay an additional N3.5 million on top of the initial fare, which was set at N4.9 million. The subsidy aims to alleviate the financial strain on pilgrims amidst economic challenges, particularly the forex crisis.
The decision to provide financial support was confirmed by a top official at the Presidency, who acknowledged the government’s efforts to assist pilgrims. However, the exact amount of N90 billion remains unconfirmed by official statements.
The fare for the Hajj pilgrimage was initially set at N4.9 million per pilgrim, with variations for different regions. However, due to economic factors, including the forex crisis, the fare was increased by over N1.9 million, bringing the total cost to N6.8 million.
In response to the financial strain on pilgrims, the NAHCON had extended the payment deadline, allowing intending pilgrims more time to make arrangements. Additionally, efforts were made to engage state governments to further subsidize the hajj fare for their residents.
While the subsidy of N90 billion is significant, it is noted that it may only cover a portion of the total number of intending pilgrims. Despite the challenges, the government’s commitment to supporting religious activities without bias towards any faith is emphasized.
