Tinubu to Present New Minimum Wage Bill to National Assembly
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced plans to send a new minimum wage bill to the National Assembly in the near future. The President made this declaration during his Democracy Day broadcast on Wednesday.
In his address, Tinubu emphasized his administration’s collaborative approach with Organized Labour, contrasting it with the repressive tactics of past regimes. “We have negotiated in good faith and open arms with organized labor on a national minimum wage. We will soon send our executive bill to the National Assembly to enshrine what has been agreed upon for the next five years or less,” he stated.
The announcement follows the submission of the National Minimum Wage Committee’s report to the President on Monday. The report highlights various proposals: the Federal Government suggested a N62,000 minimum wage, while Organized Labour advocated for N250,000. Additionally, state governors and the Organized Private Sector recommended N57,000 and N62,000 respectively.
The forthcoming bill aims to solidify these discussions and establish a new minimum wage framework, reflecting the diverse inputs from various stakeholders.
