Tinubu Summons Emergency FEC Meeting in Honour of Late President Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom. The announcement was made in a statement released from the State House, confirming the death of the former leader after a prolonged illness.

In a solemn tribute, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his predecessor, describing him as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman.” He praised Buhari’s legacy of service, recalling his tenure as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1984 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. Tinubu commended Buhari’s leadership style, marked by integrity, discipline, and an unyielding commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.

The President extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, their children, the larger Buhari family, and the people of Katsina State, especially the Daura Emirate. He revealed that he had maintained constant communication with the family since the news broke.

In Buhari’s honour, Tinubu has ordered all national flags to fly at half-staff for seven days starting Sunday. He also announced that the emergency FEC meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, would be dedicated entirely to honouring the late president’s memory and contributions. Furthermore, Tinubu stated that the Federal Government would grant Buhari full state honours befitting his role and service to the nation.

The Presidency confirmed that Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila have been dispatched to the United Kingdom to accompany the former president’s body back to Nigeria. Buhari died in London at approximately 4:30 p.m., closing a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
