Nigeria Declares Seven Days of Mourning for Former President Buhari
Nigeria has been plunged into mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82. The government has declared seven days of national mourning, during which flags will fly at half-staff in honour of the late leader, whose influence spanned decades in both military and civilian rule.
Buhari, known for his austere lifestyle and unyielding stance against corruption, first rose to prominence as a military ruler in the 1980s before returning to lead the nation as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His passing has triggered a wave of tributes from across the world, with many reflecting on a legacy marked by discipline, controversy, and deep national impact.
Weeks before his death, Buhari had travelled to the United Kingdom aboard a private jet provided by a renowned billionaire for what was described as a routine medical check-up. His condition initially showed signs of improvement, with reports that he had even gone sightseeing. However, his health soon deteriorated, leading to his admission into an intensive care unit. Vice President Kashim Shettima was dispatched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to visit Buhari, who was later moved to a care home for further recovery.
Hints of the seriousness of Buhari’s condition emerged publicly when his former spokesman, Garba Shehu, urged Nigerians to pray for him during a book launch last week. Shehu would later be the one to confirm Buhari’s death in a brief statement, quoting the Islamic prayer for the deceased and announcing that the former president had died in a London clinic.
President Tinubu, in a statement he personally signed, expressed profound sorrow over the loss, describing Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman” whose life was defined by “duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation.” Tinubu highlighted Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria, both as a military leader from 1984 to 1985 and as a civilian president, noting his efforts in promoting public discipline, confronting corruption, and prioritising national interest over personal gain.
Tinubu also extended condolences to Buhari’s wife, Aisha, his children, and the people of Katsina State, especially the Daura Emirate. An emergency Federal Executive Council meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday to honour Buhari’s memory, and the Federal Government has pledged full state honours befitting his status as a two-time Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
Buhari’s body is expected to be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, with full military honours. His death sent shock waves throughout the nation, dominating media coverage and sparking emotional tributes on social media. For many, the passing of Muhammadu Buhari marks the end of an era—one that continues to provoke debate, admiration, and reflection across Nigeria and beyond.
