Tinubu Departs Nigeria for Japan and Brazil on ‘Diplomatic and Economic Mission’
President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for a two-nation visit to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before proceeding to his first destination. In Japan, he will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) scheduled for August 20 to 22 in Yokohama. The conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” will focus on accelerating Africa’s economic transformation, enhancing the business environment and institutions through private investment and innovation, and promoting a resilient and sustainable society for human security, peace, and stability.
President Tinubu will attend plenary sessions, hold bilateral meetings, and engage with chief executives of Japanese companies with investments in Nigeria. Established in 1993 by the Japanese government in partnership with the United Nations, UNDP, the African Union Commission, and the World Bank, TICAD is a triennial forum that alternates between Japan and Africa, serving as a platform for high-level policy dialogue. The last edition was held in Tunisia in 2022.
Following TICAD9, President Tinubu will travel to Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, for a state visit from August 24 to 25 at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. His engagements in Brazil will include a bilateral meeting with his host and participation in a business forum aimed at strengthening economic ties. The Nigerian delegation, comprising key ministers and senior officials, is expected to explore avenues for deeper cooperation and sign agreements and Memoranda of Understanding with the Brazilian government.
