JUST IN: Former PDP National Secretary Dies at 80

 

Sir Rex Chuma Onyeabo, former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has died at the age of 80. His family confirmed the news in a statement released Thursday by his son, Dr. Obiora Onyeabo.

 

According to the statement, Sir Rex Onyeabo passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025. The family described him as a statesman, community leader, and devoted public servant.

 

A founding member of the PDP, Onyeabo served as the party’s National Secretary in 1999 and was a member of its Board of Trustees until his death. He also held numerous leadership titles, including Eze-Ugo I of Abuja Igbo Community, Onwa na-etili Ora I of Ugbawka, Ijele I na Akaegbe-Ugwu, and Ada-Idaha of the Efik Kingdom.

 

An alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, Onyeabo returned to Nigeria to contribute to national development. His career in public service spanned both federal and state levels, with roles including Deputy Chairman of the Federal Capital Development Authority’s governing board; Chairman of the governing councils of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital; Chairman of Nike Lake Resort Hotels, Enugu; and Permanent Secretary in the Enugu State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport.

 

He also served on the Local Government Services Commission and the Ministry of Information and Culture, and was Chairman of the Institute of Directors, Abuja. Outside public service, Onyeabo was a successful businessman, a member of the Noble Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba, and an active member of the Catholic communities in Abuja and Enugu.

 

The family has asked for prayers during this period and said funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
