JUST IN: Tinubu, Okonjo-Iweala in Closed-Door Meeting Ahead of Her Second WTO Term
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, at the Aso Villa in Abuja. The discussion, which took place in Nigeria’s political capital, focused on trade matters with implications for the country, the African continent, and the global economy.
The meeting came just weeks before the end of Okonjo-Iweala’s first term as WTO chief on August 31, 2025, and ahead of her second term, which begins on September 1. She made history in 2021 as the first African and first woman to lead the 164-member organisation.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that her continued leadership would further strengthen the WTO’s role as a driving force for inclusive global economic growth and sound governance over the next four years. The renowned economist and development expert is expected to steer the WTO through a period of evolving trade challenges and opportunities in her second term.
