Tinubu Convenes First Council of State Meeting; Buhari and Jonathan Attend, Obasanjo Absent
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently leading his inaugural Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Notably, the session is attended by former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan. Former Heads of State Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar also participated in the meeting through a virtual setup.
The Council of State, comprising the President, Vice President, former Presidents, and Heads of State, along with key government officials like the Senate President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, state governors, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Attorney-General, convenes to provide advisory support to the President on crucial policy matters.
This meeting, the first of its kind under Tinubu’s administration, follows a series of protests by citizens and groups dissatisfied with the country’s economic policies and the ongoing hardship. Among the protesters’ demands is a reassessment of the fuel subsidy removal policy initiated by President Tinubu.
Several Ministers have also been invited to the meeting to brief the Council on the administration’s policies and direction, offering members an opportunity to gain first-hand insights before advising the President on potential strategies.
