Three Dead, Several Injured as Truck Crashes into Minibus in Enugu
A devastating accident occurred on Friday evening in Emene, a suburb of Enugu, when a truck carrying laterite collided with a minibus, resulting in the tragic loss of three lives and leaving several others critically injured.
The incident took place around 7 p.m. at the busy Orie Emene Junction. The minibus, which was transporting passengers from Old Park to Emene, had just stopped to drop off passengers when the truck, reportedly coming from Adoration Road, slammed into it after crossing a railway line.
According to eyewitness accounts, the minibus was carrying seven passengers along with the driver at the time of the crash. In a desperate attempt to escape, some passengers managed to leap from the vehicle, but three were crushed under the truck’s weight. Two others suffered severe injuries and were rushed to Annunciation Hospital in Emene for urgent medical attention. A roadside vendor and her daughter were also caught up in the accident.
One witness described the harrowing scene, stating, “It was chaotic. We can hardly fathom what happened here yesterday evening. It feels surreal, especially at such a busy junction.”
The driver of the truck has been apprehended by the police. However, concerns have been raised by locals about the possibility of the driver evading justice. “The driver must be rigorously scrutinized and charged appropriately,” urged a witness, who suggested charges ranging from manslaughter to first-degree murder should be considered, given the severity of the incident.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the cause of the accident, but investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the tragedy.
