“Those Who Authorise Lethal Force Against Protesters Will Be Held Responsible” – Atiku Warns Security Agencies
The Nigeria Police and military have come under severe scrutiny following accusations of using lethal force against peaceful #EndBadGovernance protesters. Despite video evidence supporting these allegations, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has denied any wrongdoing by the security forces.
Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, issued a stern warning to Nigeria’s security agencies via his verified Twitter handle. He cautioned the service chiefs and military commanders that those authorizing the use of lethal force against peaceful protesters would be held accountable for crimes against humanity, even after their retirement.
In his tweet, Atiku emphasized the constitutional right to peaceful protest, stating, “The constitutional right to engage in protest is firmly established within our supreme law and reinforced by the judiciary. It is the solemn duty of the government and security agencies to ensure a safe and protected environment for individuals exercising their right to peaceful protest.”
The accusations and Atiku’s warning have sparked a renewed debate on the actions of the security forces and the protection of citizens’ rights in Nigeria. The government has yet to respond to these serious allegations.
