“They Invest in Corruption” — Peter Obi Warns Nigerians Against Vote Selling

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to resist the lure of vote buying, warning that it is nothing more than an investment in corruption.

In a post on his X handle on Monday, Obi appealed to citizens to take ownership of the electoral process by registering, collecting, and safeguarding their Permanent Voter Cards, which he described as the bridge to a new Nigeria. He cautioned that politicians who spend money to secure votes are only doing so to gain access to public resources for personal enrichment.

“Those who buy votes are not offering you charity; they only invest in their own corruption. They buy votes so that they can buy their way into our treasury to steal public money. Such people are not leaders, they are criminals in disguise,” Obi wrote.

The former Anambra State governor noted that selling one’s vote is equivalent to mortgaging the future, with consequences for education, healthcare, and job opportunities. He stressed that democracy can only survive if Nigerians make responsible choices at the ballot, supporting leaders with competence, character, capacity, and compassion.

“Our democracy is at stake. That is why I urge every eligible Nigerian to register, collect, and safeguard your PVC, and when the time comes, use it wisely,” Obi added.
