“The Movie Industry in America Is Dying” — Trump Imposes 100% Tariff on Foreign Films

In a dramatic move that could reshape the global film industry, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 100 percent tariff on all foreign-produced movies. In a statement released early Monday, Trump claimed the American movie industry is in steep decline, blaming international competition and incentives offered by other nations to lure away talent and production.

“The movie industry in America is dying a very fast death,” Trump declared. “Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other nations, and therefore, a national security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!”

Trump authorized the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to implement the tariff immediately, declaring: “We want movies made in America, again!”

Despite Trump’s dire assessment, recent data suggests the U.S. box office is on a recovery path. Following the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic and industry-wide labor strikes, the box office brought in \$8.7 billion last year—a slight dip from 2023’s \$9 billion, but a sign of resilience. Analysts expect stronger growth in 2025.

The new tariff has sparked backlash among industry experts and trade analysts, who argue that it could disrupt international co-productions and threaten the flow of global creative partnerships that have become integral to modern filmmaking. There are also growing concerns about potential retaliatory tariffs from affected nations, further escalating trade tensions into the cultural sector.

This move adds to Trump’s increasingly protectionist economic strategy, which already includes a blanket 10 percent import tax, elevated duties on select countries and industries, and new secondary tariffs aimed at third-party trade. The foreign film tariff is the most sweeping cultural import tax seen in the U.S. since the 1930s.
