“The Economy We Inherited Was a Huge Mess” — VP Shettima on Buhari’s Legacy
In a recent statement, Vice President Kashim Shettima criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari for leaving a “messy” economic situation for his successor, President Bola Tinubu. Speaking at the launch of Prof. Modupe Adelabu’s book, ‘Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria,’ Shettima emphasized that despite being part of the previous administration, the Tinubu government is committed to revitalizing the struggling economy.
Shettima urged Nigerians to support President Tinubu in tackling the nation’s socio-political, economic, and security issues. He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s dedication, noting, “In President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have a leader worthy of our trust. I’m not playing politics; I’m speaking from the heart.”
Shettima recounted his observations of Tinubu’s modest lifestyle, contrasting it with his own expectations of opulence. “The first time I visited his residence at Bourdillon, it was far from the grandeur I anticipated. His simplicity and personal frugality are remarkable,” Shettima said. He highlighted Tinubu’s commitment to making a meaningful impact rather than engaging in ostentatious displays of wealth.
The Vice President acknowledged the economic challenges inherited from the Buhari administration but refrained from assigning blame, focusing instead on finding solutions. He also dismissed political claims made by figures such as Atiku Abubakar and members of the ‘Obidient’ movement regarding the withdrawal of fuel subsidies.
