The 2027 Election is Between APC and Nigerians – Governor Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has stated that the 2027 general elections will present Nigerians with a defining choice—one between the current ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the interests of the Nigerian people. Makinde made this declaration during the inauguration of the new Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Southwest Zonal Secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State, dedicated to the late Soji Adagunodo, former PDP Chairman for the Southwest.

Makinde sharply criticized the APC’s track record, claiming that it has consistently failed to fulfill its promises to the public. “The APC has held the reins of power but has failed the people. It is now up to Nigerians to determine whether to keep them in office or opt for a new direction,” he remarked.

He emphasized that the upcoming election represents more than a competition between political parties, calling it a referendum on the APC’s leadership. “Nigerians are suffering. We must bring this to an end by coming together for change,” he urged, framing the election as a pivotal decision for the nation’s future.

During his address, Makinde also addressed internal conflicts within the PDP, urging the party’s leaders to work towards unity and heal internal divisions. “Our biggest challenges come from within, not from the opposition,” he observed, calling for strengthened collaboration to prevent any disruption by external forces. He emphasized the need for unity, especially in the Southwest, adding, “We must not let the ruling party dismantle the stability we’ve built.”

Responding to questions about potential presidential aspirations, Makinde commented, “I’m mature enough to make my own choices about running. The nation’s circumstances will guide any decision I make,” suggesting a thoughtful approach to his political future.

In a related address, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke also called for introspection within the PDP to resolve internal conflicts. He stressed that open dialogue and unity are essential, saying, “Our strength lies in solidarity. We must focus on building bridges within the party.” He urged members to stay true to the PDP’s founding principles of democracy and public service.

During the event, PDP’s acting national chairman, Ambassador Illiya Damagum, congratulated PDP governors for their leadership, praising them as “the backbone of the party.” PDP Zonal Chairman Kamorudeen Ajisafe (represented by Zonal Secretary Hon. Rahman Owokoniran) echoed this sentiment, advocating for unified efforts to unseat the ruling party and secure a more democratic future.

The late Soji Adagunodo’s son, Soji Adagunodo Jr., expressed gratitude for the tribute to his father. He urged the PDP to use the new headquarters as a “solution center” for the nation’s challenges, saying, “Let this building inspire genuine solutions for our people.”

The ceremony drew prominent figures, including Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal; 2023 Ogun State PDP governorship candidate, Chief Ladi Adebutu; Ondo State PDP governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi; Zonal Organizing Secretary Hon. Benson Aruwa; and Zonal Women Leader Chief Mrs. Bosede Adedibu. Former Governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Samuel Ortom, along with key senators and local representatives, attended as a show of unity for the PDP in the Southwest.
