Teenager Shot Dead by Police Officer at Checkpoint in Edo State

A police officer attached to the Edo State Command has allegedly shot and killed an 18-year-old driver, Chinedu Abimbor, after he reportedly refused to stop at a checkpoint in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, involved Abimbor, who was driving an unregistered Mercedes Benz. According to eyewitnesses, he failed to stop when flagged down by security operatives at a checkpoint. One of the officers reportedly opened fire on the vehicle, fatally shooting the teenager. His brother, who was also in the car, was arrested and taken into custody.

The killing sparked protests in Ekpoma, with local youths demanding justice and the release of the victim’s brother. Protesters alleged that police officers in the area often harass young men driving cars and said their peaceful demonstration was met with teargas.

The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident and stated that Commissioner of Police Betty Otimenyin had ordered a full investigation. He added that three patrol teams involved in the operation have been withdrawn from duty pending the outcome of the inquiry.

In an official statement, the Commissioner extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and assured the public that justice would be served.
