Teenage Masquerade Arrested for Attempted Sexual Harassment After Hugging Muslim Girl in Kogi
A 19-year-old man, Kabiru, has been arrested in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State for allegedly attempting to sexually harass a Muslim girl while dressed in a masquerade costume.
The incident occurred on January 3, 2026, in Oboroke community. The victim, a young Muslim girl wearing a niqab, was reportedly returning home after fetching water from a public tap when Kabiru approached her from behind, hugged her, and attempted further sexual assault.
In a statement, the President of Ummah Affairs in the community described the act as “unprovoked, unlawful, and a serious violation of the victim’s dignity, safety, and fundamental human rights.”
He added, “On January 3, our sister was unlawfully accosted by a masquerade while returning home from the tap. The act of hugging her and attempting sexual abuse is heinous, shameful, and totally unacceptable under any custom, culture, or religion.”
Community members acted quickly to identify and apprehend Kabiru. He has been handed over to the local vigilante group and is currently in their custody, pending appropriate disciplinary and legal action in line with both community norms and the law.
“We commend the vigilance and courage of our community members, whose prompt action ensured that justice was not obstructed,” the statement continued. “We also call on all parents and guardians to reinforce moral guidance and caution youths against engaging in acts that cause trauma to victims and severe consequences for themselves.”
The statement concluded with a message of solidarity for the victim: “We stand with her, pray for her healing and emotional recovery, and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the dignity, safety, and rights of all members of our community—especially Muslim women.”
