The suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has officially resigned from his position, leading the path for the nomination of Mr. Yemi Cardoso as the new head of the apex bank. This development comes after Emefiele’s suspension by President Bola Tinubu in June and subsequent legal proceedings related to procurement fraud.
Government sources have confirmed that Emefiele tendered his resignation to President Tinubu, thereby opening the door for Cardoso’s potential appointment. Notably, the central bank has remained silent regarding whether Emefiele’s deputy governors also resigned concurrently.
Tinubu has wasted no time in forwarding the nomination of his former Lagos State commissioner, Yemi Cardoso, along with four other deputy governors, to the Senate for confirmation. A press statement issued by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale reveals that Cardoso is expected to serve a five-year term, subject to approval by the Nigerian Senate.
President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda places a strong emphasis on implementing crucial reforms within the Central Bank of Nigeria. These reforms aim to bolster the confidence of both Nigerians and international partners in the restructuring of the Nigerian economy, ultimately steering it toward sustainable growth and prosperity for all.
