CBN Alerts Nigerians to Surge in Fake Messages, Cyber Fraud Attempts
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a warning to the public over a rise in fraudulent messages circulating online, falsely presented as official communications from the bank.
In a statement released on Tuesday by Hakama Sidi-Ali, the bank said the messages are being used to deceive individuals and, in some cases, obtain unauthorized access to personal accounts through malicious links and fake platforms.
According to the CBN, the fraudulent communications contain misleading claims about its leadership, licensing processes, and policy decisions. The bank stressed that these materials are not connected to any of its official operations.
Members of the public have been advised to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited emails, text messages, or online posts claiming to originate from the CBN. The bank specifically warned against clicking unknown links or submitting personal and financial details on unverified websites.
The CBN reiterated that its only official online presence is its verified website and urged Nigerians to rely strictly on that platform, as well as recognized media outlets, for accurate information about its activities.
It also encouraged the public to report suspicious messages, websites, or emails to appropriate law enforcement agencies for investigation.
The bank said it is continuing efforts to strengthen its cybersecurity systems in collaboration with relevant security agencies to reduce exposure to digital fraud and protect the financial system from cyber threats.
