FCT NUT staff collapses, dies while heading to work in Abuja
A staff member of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Jessey A. Audu, has died after collapsing on his way to work in Gwagwalada Area Council.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 21, at Gwahaon, near an Army checkpoint.
According to accounts from union staff member Ibrahim Adamu, Audu had left his home for the office around 7:12 a.m. when he suddenly collapsed and fell into a drainage channel.
Passersby who noticed him inside the drainage raised an alarm. Police officers at the scene, with the assistance of members of the public, identified him and contacted NUT staff, who quickly arrived and evacuated him to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.
Medical personnel later confirmed him dead, after which his remains were deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Audu, who worked as a cleaner at the FCT NUT state office, was originally from Yelwa community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. He resided in Unguwar Dodo, Gwagwalada Area Council, and was married with children.
The Chairman of the FCT wing of NUT, Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas, confirmed the development, saying union officials had visited the morgue where the body was deposited.
Colleagues described him as active and healthy before the incident. One staff member, who spoke anonymously, said Audu was at work on Monday, carrying out his duties and cleaning office premises until closing time.
A police source at the Gwagwalada Division also confirmed the incident.
