Suspected Cable Thief Electrocuted at Awka Transformer Substation
A man, yet to be identified, died after being electrocuted while tampering with electricity equipment owned by FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited at Ogechukwu Street in Awka.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at a transformer substation. Reports indicate that the suspect had cut through cables when a heavy explosion triggered electrocution.
Izunna Okafor, Head of Communications for FirstPower, confirmed the incident and urged residents and community leaders to report any suspicious activity near electricity infrastructure. He noted that preliminary investigations suggest the explosion resulted from unlawful interference with the company’s equipment. Witnesses reported the suspect was dressed in a security uniform at the time of the incident.
Anambra State Police operatives were called to the scene, removed the body, and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.
Okafor condemned acts of vandalism and electricity theft, stressing that such behavior not only disrupts power supply but also poses serious risks to public safety. He reiterated that protecting electricity infrastructure requires community vigilance and cooperation.
