Suspect Confesses to Rape, Murder After Consuming Alcohol, Cigarettes
35-year-old labourer James Emmanuel has admitted to raping his co-worker, Deborah, to death after consuming four bottles of beer and six sticks of cigarettes. The disturbing incident occurred in Akure, Ondo State, where the suspect confessed that the idea to commit the heinous act came to him under the influence of alcohol and nicotine.
During an interview in Akure, Emmanuel disclosed that he killed Deborah out of fear that she might expose him. In an attempt to conceal his crime, he disposed of her lifeless body inside a waste pit on the farm premises. The victim’s demise was initially reported as a murder case on January 18, 2024, at the Okuta-Elerinla Police Station.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Funmi Odunlami, provided additional details, stating that Deborah was raped to death on her farm. The tragedy unfolded when the complainant, on January 17, 2024, discovered that Deborah was missing from her apartment after going to the farm to tend to goats and fowls.
Concerned about the whereabouts of her worker, the complainant questioned James Emmanuel, another worker on the farm, who claimed not to have seen Deborah. Subsequent investigations by the police led to the arrest of Emmanuel, who, during interrogation, confessed to the rape and murder, citing intoxication as a contributing factor.
This distressing incident highlights the devastating consequences of substance abuse and underscores the need for increased vigilance to prevent such tragedies in our communities. The suspect is now in custody, awaiting legal proceedings for this grave crime.
