Surging Demand for Dele Farotimi’s Explosive Book Following Arrest Leads to Stock Shortages

Bookstores across Nigeria are struggling to keep up with the surging demand for Dele Farotimi’s controversial book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. The book, which alleges judicial corruption involving renowned lawyer Afe Babalola, has been flying off shelves since Mr. Farotimi’s recent arrest captured national attention.

Major outlets like Tinu-Ade Bookshop in Ibadan and VIC Bookstore in Abuja have confirmed that their copies sold out within days, while the book continues to trend on Amazon and other platforms, attracting readers both locally and internationally.

Published on July 2, 2024, the book delves into Mr. Farotimi’s experiences within Nigeria’s legal system, presenting a scathing critique of its flaws. It specifically accuses Afe Babalola of manipulating the judiciary, citing the Gbadamosi-Eletu case, in which Mr. Babalola allegedly “corrupted the Supreme Court to procure a fraudulent judgment.”

In response to these claims, police officers acting on Mr. Babalola’s behalf stormed Mr. Farotimi’s Lagos office earlier this week. According to witnesses, they confiscated staff devices, issued threats, and arrested Mr. Farotimi. He was transported to Ado-Ekiti, where he now faces a 16-count charge of defamation. Despite pleading not guilty, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun denied him bail and remanded him in custody until December 10.

Ironically, Mr. Babalola has publicly championed human rights and education, including significant donations to King’s College London for African students. He has also urged legal professionals to prioritize public interest over personal disputes. Yet his decades-long career includes serving as legal counsel for controversial figures like former military rulers Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha, as well as securing lucrative contracts under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration from 1999 to 2007.
