Supreme Court Verdict Empowers Grassroots, Scares Big Men” – APGA Chairman Njoku
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Edozie Njoku, has provided insight into the opposition from prominent figures against the Supreme Court’s ruling that granted financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Speaking after a thanksgiving service in Abuja, Chief Njoku praised the Supreme Court for the landmark decision, emphasizing that it empowers grassroots governance. He argued that the verdict benefits APGA significantly, as the party has always championed grassroots movements.
Chief Njoku criticized politicians opposing the ruling, asserting they are worried about losing control over local governance. He highlighted that direct funding from the federation account to LGAs would foster development and improve governance through better checks and balances.
“The Supreme Court has rightfully returned power to the people. The federal government wouldn’t be pleased if states withheld their funds, just as states have been withholding funds meant for LGAs,” Njoku stated. He argued that the ruling would redirect focus to local governance, ensuring democracy’s benefits reach the grassroots.
He acknowledged that many state-level politicians, who benefitted from the previous system, are unhappy with the change. However, he expressed delight on behalf of APGA, noting that the ruling aligns with the party’s grassroots ethos.
Njoku also celebrated APGA’s recent internal legal victory, suggesting a fortuitous alignment with the Supreme Court’s ruling. He dismissed concerns about opposition within Anambra, attributing it to shifting power dynamics.
In a nod to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Njoku expressed gratitude for recognizing him as APGA’s National Chairman following the court’s decision.
